Since 1989 the Land Rover Discovery has blazed its own trail with a combination of capability and versatility. Year to year, innovation after innovation, the Discovery has pioneered uncharted territories and has always been a step ahead in SUV design.
The Discovery is one of Land Rover's most captivating vehicles. Function, form, and finesse are integrated into one in this midsize SUV. The interior is precisely designed with premium materials to create an aura of refinement and luxury. The cabin is versatile with different configurations: seating up to 7 with generous legroom, cargo space of up to 45 cubic feet behind the second row, an enormous 82.7 cubic feet with all rows folded down, and multiple storage compartments throughout the interior.
The performance of the SUV is outstanding with its modern technology features. The flawless ability to drive off-road is handled by the all-terrain technologies Terrain Response and All Terrain Progress Control. The fully independent suspension system makes a comfortable ride off-road and on-road. The on-road dynamics are so comfortable, you'll drive miles without even noticing the distance and time traveled.
The Discovery is no doubt the SUV for all drives, off-road, on-road, or a combination of both. You should have high expectations for your Land Rover vehicle. This automaker takes pride in customer satisfaction and driver safety. To achieve these goals, Land Rover often makes changes to its models. As for the 2023 Land Rover Discovery, you can expect some updates this year. Perhaps the biggest news with this version is the arrival of the Metropolitan Edition. It has a six-cylinder engine that produces 355 horsepower. It also comes with 22-inch wheels and a heated steering wheel. Other features with this new trim include heated seats, silver bumper inserts, and special emblems. In addition, R-Dynamic trim now has a black contrast roof as a standard feature. Adaptive cruise control and three-zone climate control are now standard across the board with the Discovery.
The Land Rover Discovery has five generations of vehicles dating back to 1989. The original Discovery was released in the United Kingdom in 1989 and was not released to the North American market until the update for the 1994 model year. The Discovery in the United States needed to fit the North American vehicle standards, so airbags were added as a standard safety feature and the Discovery's engine was the 3.9L V8 engine from the Range Rover and was updated to the 4.0L engine.
The second generation debuted in the US in 1999. This was the Series II of the Discovery and the updates it received were a total facelift on the exterior and updated interior, but still fit a similar look and feel of the Series I Discovery. Also updated in this generation was the engine and an updated differential, traction control, and hill descent control.
The third generation Discovery was marketed in the US as the LR3, as the Discovery name was not very well received in the market and the alphanumeric names for vehicles were preferred in vehicle naming. This generation came about in 2004 and the major updates to the SUV included a full independent suspension system, a new body construction method, updated engines, updated gearboxes, and the addition of the new, innovative Terrain Response system.
The fourth generation Discovery, the LR4 in the US, was introduced in 2009. This generation's major updates were mainly mechanical updates to improve reliability. The updates included engine improvements, gearbox improvements, suspension and brake refinements, and a redesigned, more luxurious interior with the addition of more modern technology.
The fifth and current generation has turned away from the alphanumeric naming and circled back to the Discovery name in the US. The major updates to this generation are similar to the fourth generation. Mechanical updates were added for the engine, gearbox, and differential. The vehicle also dropped nearly 800 pounds in weight thanks to the aluminum chassis and body panels. The second iteration of the Terrain Response system was also introduced for the current generation, which is constantly monitors the performance of the vehicle and adjusts the performance in traction, braking, differential, and more.
